The theory that changed the way we look at development
Identity verses Role Confusion is Erikson's 5th Stage of Development
This stage takes place in the adolescent years. Approximately 13-19 years old.
This stage is also know as the Fidelity Stage. It answers the question "Who Am I?"
This is the time in life where most teenagers grapple with the idea of defining who they are to themselves and their friends. Many times they feel misunderstood or out of place as they try to define themselves.
Personalities of adolescents during this stage are formed by the social and cultural characteristics around them. They will try to find their niche. The place they belong (Moshman).
Adolescents are looking for or have found unity with the elements of their past and the expectations of their futures. They are looking for continuity and the feeling of sameness with others around them (Moshman).
In the process of finding themselves, adolescents are subject to a sense of loyalty/fidelity.
For Erikson role confusion was the self discovery of sexual identity.
Adolescents define themselves through their interactions. This includes both the inclusion and exclusion of different people from their friend groups, activities they are involved in, and different aspects from the culture around them. (Capps)
This is the transition from childhood to adulthood.
